Install Wine 2.0.2 Stable Release on Ubuntu 17.04 and Below

Wine 2.0.2 is the latest stable release to Wine 2.0 series. This release comes as a maintainance release to address various bugs reported since last release. Before we proceed on how to install wine 2.0.2 on Linux, lets take a quick look at some of the reported issues addressed in this update.

  • The TreeView + right click doesn’t work the way it does in native windows
  • Some extra mouse buttons that do not work in Firefox resolved
  • No standard background color in Wine configuration

  • regedit: a key created when right-clicking the context menu is in an incorrect position
  • Also Secret Files 3 demo shows only some parts of background in ConfigTool
  • A right click on a registry key does not select the key
  • The default registry key is not the same as on Windows
  • MalwareBytes Anti-malware software needs msvcr100.dll.lldiv implementation
  • Corrupted gauntlet character screen background fixed
  • The followings app needed some dll files “ACDSee Pro 9”, “Final Fantasy X”, “0 A.D.”, “Steep (Ubisoft)”, “Martal Kombat X”, “Kontact 5.6”, “Aliens vs. Predator (2010)”, “ACDSee Pro 9 needs”, “Playstation”, as well as “Itunes”
  • Free Devanagari font Samanata crashes during GPOS processing
  • WSAStringToAddress fails to parse IP v6 addresses with port number
  • Excel 2010 does not work: unimplemented function oleaut32.dll.GetAltMonthNames
  • Multiple 64-bit applications crash with stack overflow errors when Wine is compiled with GCC 7.x

How to install Wine 2.0.2 on Ubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 16.04

Please note that Rico Tzschichholz currently maintains an up-to-date WineHQ release in this PPA marked as Unstable in name even though it works.

1) Install Wine via PPA Repository

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/unstable
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wine-stable winetricks

2) How to compile Wine on Ubuntu

tar xjf wine-2.0.2.tar.xz
cd wine-2.0.2/

# install wine required dependencies
sudo apt-get build-dep wine

# For 32bit OS
sudo ./configure

# For 64-bit OS
sudo ./configure --enable-win64

# If encounter Xlib/Xfree86 error, run following commands and repeat configure
sudo apt-get install libx11-dev:i386 libfreetype6-dev:i386

# ----- Update and Install Wine -----
sudo make
sudo make install

How to uninstall Wine from Ubuntu

sudo apt-get purge wine-stable winetricks && sudo apt autoremove
