Steps for compiling Linux kernel on SMP Itanium IA64 system

Q. I would like to know howto compile Linux kernel on SMP Itanium IA64 system. Is it possible?

A. Yup it is possible to compile Linux kernel as it is one of the supported platform. Read the README file located in /usr/src/linux* directory. Here are quick steps:

# cd /usr/src/linux-version
# make clean
# make mrproper
# make menuconfig
# make dep
# make
# make modules
# make install
# make modules_install

In order to boot your new kernel, you’ll need to copy the kernel image (e.g. …/linux/arch/ia64/boot/bzImage after compilation) to the place where your regular bootable kernel is found. Modify boot loader config file and reboot system to use new kernel.
